For me it's the same. It's basically a short version. Not the running nickname but... I have never been called the usual nicknames My name is Frederike and when I was a little a friend of mine couldn't pronounce it (who can blame her?) and she always said Hihihike. So when we grew older Hike stayed. I am also called Freddy (most often) or Fredl or Fred. Rike would be the running one but no one calls me that.

Alena what's your full name? It's Elena In fact in Russia Alena and Elena can go like two different names, but my parents prefered to call me Elena and Alena for the short I like that, for I do not like a usual short one for my name (Lena). Alena should be actually pronounced like Alyona or smth like this (there is special sound in Russian language, which gives shivers to lots of strangers who are learning it If anyone is familiar with German, it should be ö "oe" (o umlaut sound).

Another musical fan Despite having a French one among my favourite shows, the one I´ve seen most ist Starlight Express, followed by Cats. So, yes, Lloyd-Webber among the favourites, too. And I still dare to say so *g* Aaaah, go Starlight! Love the show! Seen it 4 times - 1 time in London, twice in Germany and this year - a touring version in Dublin.

I find it kinda interesting that your parents went for Alena for the nickname. We also have both Elena and Alena, except Elena is mostly Helena to us and we use male version of Alena - Alen. Or Alan. The female version is not so common, and if it is, then it's Alenka. Also, the "e" would be pronounced like in (eng.) "egg".
