Don't make any plans yet for going to Zagreb. There's a big problem, I'll let you know what happens.

The problem is that the mayor is saying he wants to tear down the rink where EC was supposed to happen next year. And Zagreb does not have another adequate rink. There are 2 more rinks - one is too small and open(Zee, that's the rink we went to skate when you were here), the other is big enough but basically does not have enough room for audience. So as you see, if the mayor tears down Dom sportova (the EC rink) and doesn't make any changes to the other 2, I don't think we'd be able to host EC.
At this point this is all talk (despite mayor saying there's 80% chance of this happening), so we don't know anything yet.

Why the hell does he want to put that specific ice rink down? I mean he must be aware of the fact that the upcoming Euros is a very prestige international event drawing huge attention into Zagreb let alone all the financial support it is going to bring over to the city itself. I just do not get these kind of political acts.

Because 2009 we are supposed to host World Handball Championship. And we don't have enough sport centers. And you know....handball is so much more important here. *sarcasm*
Basically, last few months there was this huge fuss about building the sport arenas for 2009 WHC. And apparently it's cheaper to tear down Dom sportova (which is btw - multifunctional sport centar so not only FS will be hurt by this, but also hockey, ping pong, tennis... not to mention it's sometimes used as a concert hall) and build a new sports arena with more places (15 000) and parking than to build a new one from scratch in the more remote part of town. Of course, it is still not sure if they're gonna tear it down completely or just try to do some rearrangements and such.
Now if they do tear it down (which is a damn shame because it does have some emotional value for people of Zagreb, but at the same time it really needs some serious investment) and do nothing to upgrade Velesajam.... we're screwed. And of course if they do start upgrading Velesajam and tear down Dom sportova, I fear the skaters and hockey player will not be able to practice at all during that time since Salata is way to small to be able to hold all those skaters.

BTW - just to show how much places for an audience there is on Velesajam. See the upper part where the banners are? Yes, that's it. And actually during the Nats, Rasha and I sat at the ice level on some bleachers and skaters were maybe a meter away. On the pic it's the place right to the glass....or just under and a bit left from the banners mentioned above. So you see, it really is not suitable for an (international) competition.

Ok, now I see. But I think I cannot agree with your mayor ;D To tear down a builiding and built a completely new one rarely gets any cheaper than put up a new one in a maybe more distant location off the city. This is now happening in Bratislava so I can tell. The general experience proves that the longer the project takes the more money consuming it tends to be. However If this should be the reason not to place Euros in Zagreb I think it would be a real pity Is there a chance of any other Croatian city to stand in for Zagreb or not really?

If there is another city, I am not aware of it.
A friend of mine talked to Cro fed and they said they were promised (by the ministry of sport, i guess) Euros will be held in Zagreb. So we shall see.

Oh not very good news, Nena , I really hope that the mayor will finally change his mind... As for that small rink... it is very tiny indeed , not big enough for a competition at all... But hey, Euros will be in a year, so he better decide soon!
